It can control your fridge when connected to a smart socket, however, we've had mixed results with that.

You'll require a hub to use SmartThings, which isn't expensive. Samsung has a number of options, including the SmartThings Station that you can attach to a router and use as an nightlight. There's also a cheaper SmartThings Hub Dongle that can support Z-Wave and Zigbee, with Thread support in the near future.

Once you've connected your smart fridge to your phone and hub, it's very simple to use. SmartThings allows you to control your refrigerator from any location. Notifications are sent to your smartphone when it is closed or opened. You can set up schedules, change the temperature and set reminders.

SmartThings is an early member of the Home Connectivity Alliance, which is working to make major appliances in the home from a variety of manufacturers interoperable. In the near future you could control your Samsung washer/dryer, Electrolux oven, and LG TV through the same app.

Although it's not as widely supported as Alexa and Google Assistant, SmartThings does have some major players on its roster that include Arlo, Nest, Belkin and Lifx. You can make grocery lists while on the go and monitor food items to check the expiration date. You can also use a specific recipe app that will provide instructions while you cook.

This is the second generation of Family Hub fridges and Samsung says it's spent a year fine-tuning them based on customer feedback. You can now create different profiles for every member of your family to allow them to customize the information and apps that they can access. It's not as great as having Alexa integration built into your refrigerator, but it's an improvement on the previous model.

Apart from its entertainment and grocery management capabilities, Family Hub also acts as a controller for Samsung's SmartThings platform. It can be integrated into Matter-compatible devices, such as lights or plugs and can be used with the touchscreen to control them as well.

Samsung's fridge is only a couple of years old and even though it has a lot of functionality, its touchscreen smarts aren't something that majority of people would consider an essential feature. They're more fun and a bit of frivolous accessories than anything else.

That might change as more software updates are released, but for the moment these models are ideally suited to those who want the most complete connected fridge that is possible. If you're not one of them, you can always opt for a less expensive model without the Family Hub to save some money. That might still be worth it if you have a lot of smart home devices that need to be controlled via the same screen or if you simply enjoy the idea of having a fridge with a giant touchscreen.
